An Epic Highlighter Post!

17 Apr

Greetings fellow beauty lovers! Today I bring a special post, all about highlighters. I was not able to swatch everything in my collection, but I did try to pick the most popular or most readily available items so that you can see what many of them look like compared to one another. For most of them I am including a flash and a natural light photo. The natural light really washes them out on camera I think, so bear that in mind. The flash versions are more accurate representations of what the colors look like, but I did it for posterity’s sake anyway :). This is going to be a picture heavy post!

ELF All Over Color Sticks L-R: Persimmon, Lilac Petal, Golden Peach, Spotlight

L-R: Precriptives Sheen Cream in Beam, NARS Illuminator in Copacabana, Mark Touch & Glow, NARS Illuminator in Orgasm

The above pictures represent my favorite kind of highlight–liquid/cream. I just think it always look so much more luminous and dewy when you use a liquid. I reach for a liquid or cream highlighter daily, while powder highlighters are much less frequently used, maybe a handful of times a month if that. I am still lusting after a few more of the MUFE Uplights (they are $29 each at but I am waiting for them to arrive in Sephora (mid-May I have been told) so I can swatch. I am also lemming the infamous Jemma Kidd Dewy Glow in Rose Gold., but haven’t indulged yet because, as you can see, I have enough to deal with at the moment in the way of cream highlighters. A few of these items may be difficult to find, and although I tried not to include such items, I did so so that if you do find them that you snatch them up! Prescriptives Sheen Cream has long been discontinued, but has remained for about 3 years a favorite of mine. If they still sold it, I would buy several. Sonia Kashuk’s liquid highlighter is new for spring this year, but has been notoriously difficult to find. I was told by the company you will see more soon, but they had a problem with the manufacturer. Sephora’s luminous glow is also a cherished favorite of mine, but it has also been discontinued! I wanted to include some pictures of the items that are not as popular so that you know what they look like if you find them:

Sephora Luminous Glow

Mark Touch & Glow Cream

The unique thing about the Mark product is that you can use each of the colors separately and you have 9 colors to use. Or you can swirl them together to get the peachy bronze effect I got in the swatch (it appears darker in the swatch than it is in person). Plus this is more like a cream-to-powder product.

Cream/Liquid Wrap up:

  1. Grab a Prescriptives Sheen Cream or Sephora Luminous Glow if you ever find one
  2. The budget buys are the ELF All Over Color Sticks at just $1 and they are very lovely (I would choose the sticks over the liquids they offer as the liquids get quite frosty)
  3. The MUFE Uplights I have are the sparkling version. If you don’t like glitter, you won’t like this version. I plan to try the pearl versions next.
  4. My newest favorite is NARS Copacabana. I ordered it in stick version as well because I like it so much. Smashbox Artificial Light in Flash is equally gorgeous and ranks quite high for me. It was one of my first highlighters.
  5. MAC Cream Colour Bases are very natural looking and an afforable and easily available option. I use these so much!
  6. I love mixing the Sonia Kashuk one with my foundation, and have been doing this almost daily since receiving it.

Powder Wrap up:

  1. Guerlain Meteorites are a waste of money–at least the shade I got. It barely shows up on my skin and has that old lady smell that some Guerlain products have (I don’t enjoy it-the primer smells better than this). I don’t think I would ever buy another one. Mine was a smaller size that came in a set. Thank goodness, because in the 2 years I have owned I have used it MAYBE once. Yeah, I give it a big F-.  Sorry if you like them, it just didn’t highlight AT ALL for me.
  2. The two Body Shop products are great. I love the Peach Shimmer Waves so much. I believe it was LE for last year, but if you can find it..grab it up!
  3. Lorac Perfectly Lit and Mary-Lou Manizer are wonderful highlighters, and are so natural looking for being powders. Lorac just gives me this ethereal glow that I love so much, it is in my top 5 for sure!
  4. Benefit Georgia is nice, but very very subtle on my skintone. On the other hand, Tarina Tarantino is super sparkly. You must use it with a light hand but for special events or nights out it is gorgeous!
  5. In person, Vegas Strip and Dior Amber Diamond are almost dupes. The texture is different, but I am not sold on the hype of Amber Diamond yet. It may be going back to Sephora! For the price, it just isn’t that different or special to me. 😦  I am, however still interested in trying Rose Diamond and the other limited edition shade if I can track it down.
  6. Bobbi Brown Shimmerbrick is also nothing to write home about. Platinum Pink is a LE shade, but I would be interested in trying another. I will probably pick one up the next time I am at my CCO (much cheaper that way). They are worth the CCO price, but I don’t think I would ever pay full price for one.

Well, that is probably my biggest and longest post ever! I am a total highlighter addict and I am always searching for more! What are your thoughts? Are you a cream/liquid fan or do you prefer powders? What highlighters do you own that are your favorite?

Mix ‘n’ Match

11 Apr

Good Afternoon ladies! I hope all of your Mondays have been treating you well. I am so geared up for spring and summer after this bought of super warm weather this weekend, I just want to live outside! I cannot wait to start buying flowers and plants again!

In the mean time, I can still have lots of fun with makeup! About two weeks ago I posted a twitpic of a mixed blush (a cream base and a powder over the top) to show how you have so many more blushes than you think you own if you have a few of each! I love to create my own custom colors when I have the time, so I thought I would share with you guys a few ideas of mixing up your own colors.

L-R: NARS Cactus Flower, Milani Luminoso, Mixed Together

Above, you can see that both of these blushes are beautiful in their own right. But just look what a gorgeous color it makes when you blend them together? A stunning bright peachy-coral. I shade that I would love to purchase all by itself!

L-R: MAC Cream Color Base Madly Magenta, Tarte Adored, Mixed Together

Here I wanted to really bring out the color in Tarte’s Adored Amazonian Clay Blush. It is pretty and slightly more subtle on it’s own, but when added to Madly Magenta you really take it up a notch (or 5, lol).  But I absolutely love the way this blush came out! It reminds me of how MAC Sakura blush out to have been, by looking at the pan and having swatched it. This combo is much, much better!

L-R: MAC Cream Color Base Tickle Me Pink, NARS Taj Mahal, Mixed Together

This is the picture that inspired this post, as well as a friendly suggestion from the very talented 25FLondon. I was trying to create a tangerine shade of blush, and I think I pulled it off quite well. I will definitely be using this combo in the summer, as my skin gets a bit more color to it.

Whether you like the color of the blush as it is (I like every one of these very much on their own) or if you aren’t quite happy with it, it is rather fun to play around and make new colors from the ones you already have. I think that’s part of the “art” of makeup and bringing out your creative side. I do this with eyeshadows and bases, and lipsticks and lipliners all the time, as I am sure most of you do as well. I would love to see some of the other things you ladies come up with, so I “tag” you all to do a post like this.

January Favorites!

7 Feb

Hello all! I have decided to start doing favorites monthly now, as time permits.

First up, a splurge item from Chanel (as seen in Michele1218’s videos on youtube, link is in the left side bar). It is the Soleil tan de Chanel bronzing makeup base, and I really  really enjoy this product.

Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel

The smell of this is divine! I love the creamy consistency and it blends so smoothly. It gives the perfect glowy bronze look and it is matte. It was more expensive than I would normally pay for a bronzer but I haven’t seen another product quite like this. If you haven’t seen or tried this, I recommend visiting a Chanel counter and checking it out!

My next favorite is an eyeshadow palette I have already reviewed here. I have been raving and raving about this palette, which is again from something I saw in Michele1218’s videos (love her!).

Tarina Tarantino Sparklicity Palette

There isn’t much more to say then I have already said in the review. I use this palette SO frequently, more frequently than even my UD Naked Palette. Love, love love!

Now on to my favorite lip product of the month. It’s a lipstick by MAC and I have been wearing this almost every day.

MAC Freckletone

It is my favorite nude lipstick. It isn’t chalky or cakey looking and it is a warm nude instead of a cool pink nude. It looks great with my skintone and is wearable with just about everything.

Another MAC product that I am currently loving are the paint pots. I have a few colors but my two current favorites are Rubenesque and Soft Ochre.

MAC Paint Pot Soft Ochre and Rubenesque

I have been using these everyday. Not together, of course, but one or the other. Soft Ochre is great for neutralizing any discoloration on your eye (veins, etc.). These act as great bases. I still use a primer underneath, because they can crease on you. They really help bring out the color in eye shadows. They also help the shadows stick better. Great product.

Last thing by MAC as a favorite for January is an MSF I found last month at a CCO but didn’t really start using until this month. It is the Refined MSF.

MAC MSF Refined

I am glad I found this. I have heard about this on various blog and videos I watch. It is so natural and not over the top like other MSFs can be (I am looking at you, Shimpagne). I love using this as a highlight and even lightly dusting all over my face because it isn’t super sparkly or shimmery. I will have swatches coming up soon.

My next favorite is a blush I had my eye on for a long time before finally swatching it a Sephora and deicing I needed to have it. Check out NARS Douceur.

NARS Douceur

It shouldn’t be a surprise that this is my favorite blush this month since it pairs nicely with my fav lipstick and eyeshadow palette. I have been wearing them all combined together A LOT. NARS blushes blend well and although the vast majority of their blushes are highly pigmented, this one has a more subdued feel which makes it nice to pair with a more dramatic and bold eye. Be careful with this one, depending on your skin tone it may not show up on you, or you may have to layer it quite a bit to show up. I am NC37 for reference.

My last favorite is going to go be nail polish. I usually change my polish every 2-3 days because I just love to experiment, but this is a polish that I can wear for days and days and I normally don’t like nudes. This one just works for me so well. It’s from Essie’s spring collection, it’s called Topless and Barefoot!

Essie Barefoot and Topless

This polish lasts on me for at least a week. It would have lasted longer I am sure but I changed my polish to match a dress for an event I went to . Nude polishes usually don’t look flattering on me but this one works with my skin tone. It is a creme finish and it had a nice smooth application.

Well, that sums up my go-to products for the last month. I love hearing and reading about other people’s favorite items, so please leave your ideas in the comments below or tweet me your favs!

I will be swatching and reviewing these items in upcoming posts. The items I purchased:

– NYX Blush in Raisin (Michele1218 recommended this blush and I love it!)

– NYX lipsticks in Fig and Rose (as seen swatched by Tiffany on WillWorkForMakeup)

– NYX Glitter Cream Eye Palettes in Sweet Chocolate Browns and Royal Violets

– Milani Dressmaker nail polish

– Lip Balm- came free in my shipment–thanks Cherry Culture!

But for this post, I will show you the NYX Raisin blush. When I first saw it in the packaging it looked similar to NARS Douceur. Upon further investigation it is different, but both are more subdued. Take a look:

NARS Douceur and NYX Raisin

NARS Douceur (L) and NYX Raisin (R)

They look more similar in the pan than when they are swatched on the skin. Doesn’t everything seem to go that way? Anyhow, I really enjoy this NYX color. I wore it today and it looks so natural and is one of the easiest blushes to blend that I own, seriously. What do you think? Which of these blushes would you wear? I definitely enjoy the NYX price better at about $4 compared to the $26 you will pay for a NARS blush!
